Grain and map — the documentary explainer video style

A video-style skill that directs a short vertical video as a documentary explainer in the manner of Johnny Harris's work: real photographs cut into layers and pushed through in parallax, a dark map the camera flies into while a route draws and a pin drops, typed labels, one big kinetic line per scene, film grain in every frame and one light leak per scene on a dark warm field. It fixes the material, a motion language (one ease per job), three layers in every scene, eight elements each with one verb, a method for cutting on the transcript's word timings, caption rules, how to make every asset from photographs the client owns and open map data with nothing AI-generated on screen, and a review checklist. It reproduces the moves, never anyone's footage or photographs.

When to use it

Direct and build a short vertical video in the grain-and-map style: a documentary explainer where real sources arrive in a fast montage (a new photograph, page or object every half second to second and a half, each in a film-slide frame and pushing in), photographs are cut into layers and moved in parallax, and maps show change over time — areas filling and retreating, markers travelling with them, a date stamp turning — while big kinetic lines land on the voice and grain sits on every frame. Use when someone asks for a video "in the documentary style", "like a Johnny Harris explainer", a map video, a history or "how we got here" story, a founder story told with photographs, or an explainer that must feel filmed without any footage. Do not use it for a beat-cut product drop, a bright flat-colour brand piece or a talking head.
